Solar Power Monitoring of a typical home. I was interested in how my 4000 Watts of solar panels was working. I will soon introduce some logic. I will eliminate the Pool Pump Timer and make it only go "on" when there is enough solar to run it.

Note: The solar power pops between 500W and 50W when a cloud comes over.

Update: 4:10 PM Aug 16 my house took a lightning strike. Blew out both inverters, and everything hooked to my LAN. 2 routers, 1 motherboard, 1 video card, my VOIP. Fun fun. I think I'll add some LAN arresters and better grounding.

9-12-2016 Got one of the blown MosFets today, soldered it in with a new fuse and 1/2 of my solar system is back on-line! Still waiting parts for the other 1/2 of my system.

I couldn't fix the other inverter. Replaced the MosFets but alas no go. Purchased another 1000W inverter and I'm back making power! 9-27-2016

2017 update. I took the panels down for Hurricane IRMA, then added 2 more for a total of 1790W. One panel on phase A was not producing power. I pulled it down and went to work. Wow, you can't use a voltmeter cause the cells are little batteries. You can't use an ohm meter for the same reason. Found out the only way to test was to measure the current output. I stuck a pin through the white coating on the rear of the panel and could probe any point I wanted. Traced the open down to first a row of cells, then found an open at a 90 degree turn of the main power from that leg. I cut off the white coating over this joint (backside of the panel) and found two flat buss wires sitting on each other. I pulled out the big solder gun and went to town on it. Fixed, now working. Re calked the pin holes and the surgery point and put it back on the roof. Next mod it to program the Arduino to shut off a panel when producing too much power. Or to shunt the excess power to a storage battery. I bought 1.2KW of LiFePo batteries for $120. Will build a charge controller and suck the power off these batteries at night.

I calculated wire loss in my system. I have 200 feet of #10 wire so that is 0.19 ohm. I have 22A max flowing in this wire. So Power = I^2 x R = 92 Watts. So for a 1790W system I'm losing a max of 92W or roughly 5%.

I'd like to help but don't really understand the question. You can send 8 things to Thingspeak. My Arduino code sends these 8. Then at ThingSpeak I pick one of the data fields and graph it.

1900W. One day will add more but it's tough to deal with the excess generation. I don't have a backward power meter so I get charged for any excess generation...

Are you not able to get a meter that will allow you to get paid for power injected into the grid?
Even if it costs, it would be worth it, and simpler than limiting output when over-generating.

Worth it? $2000 for engineering drawings, building permits, added hardware. $100 for the power company. It would make my payback 12.5 years.
